Lesson Details

Unlike some of the other Donald MacDonald settings, it is not uncommon to hear Too Long in this Condition being played in this ‘unorthodox’ style. The original score can be viewed on the Piobaireachd Society website. You can purchase the 2011 edition here.

Donald MacDonald could be described as “the pioneer of the modern method of writing Highland bagpipe music on the stave.” He published his first collection of ceol mor in 1820, with the second following six years later in 1826. While these books were the first published we can see a more direct descent in the settings played today from Angus MacKay’s collection. However, over recent years there has been a growing interest in Donald MacDonald’s settings and style, in which there are often different types of variation with alternative ways of playing embellishments. In this course Roddy MacLeod and Glenn Brown look at some of their own favourites from the Donald MacDonald collections, throwing a different light on some familiar pieces. Scans of the original manuscripts are available from the Piobaireachd Society website while the lessons will use recently reedited versions which can be purchased here
